Eudunda Township

Eudunda is high in the ranges beyond the Barossa Valley a rural town in South Australia, roughly 103 kilometres or about 1.5 hours from Adelaide, established in 1870 after settlers began moving into the area in the 1860s Eudunda is in the Regional Council of Goyder local government area

The district of Eudunda began to thrive with the railway being declared opened in 1878. By 1886, Eudunda had all the trappings of a burgeoning farming town, with many businesses setting up trade. The coming decades saw Eudunda establish itself as a centre for local agriculture and stock trading. The early years of prosperity have left their legacy in a well preserved town. One of the early and very successful institutions, the Eudunda Farmer's Co-op, continues still through the local grocery shop.

The area attracted in particular hardworking Silesian settlers, who had also founded Hahndorf, Lobethal and the Barossa Valley. Among their number was the grandfather of undoubtedly Eudunda's most famous son, world-renowned author Colin Thiel , whose 80th birthday was celebrated in November 2000. The cottage where he grew up can still be seen near Eudunda today.

Now almost one hundred and thirty years later, Eudunda is still going strong, with ever diversifying industry and trade. Eudunda offers the visitor a taste of a simple rural life that can rarely be found in our increasingly busy and hectic lives. It is quiet, friendly and hospitable, the way country life is supposed to be.
